Do you want to train the dog by yourself instead of professional trainer?
We will show you how to train a dog effectively.
Training a dog fundamentally is not that different from training a puppy. So, you can refer to the article we wrote last week about how to train a puppy.
In this article, we will show you how to train a dog, including choosing a dog befitting of your lifestyle, preparing enough time for your dog’s training, being the leader, giving toilet training to your dog, and giving obedience training to your dog.
How to train your dog #1 – Choose a dog befitting of your lifestyle
Having a dog as a companion is a long-term commitment. Before you adopt a dog into your house, you have to consider whether or not the dog type fits a lifestyle that you have.
If you have quite relaxed personality, do not pick a high and active and enthusiastic dog, you will tire yourself out. You might want to pick a less active dog like Clumber Spaniel maybe.
If you are an active person you might want to choose Russel Terrier, which is enthusiastic and has a lot of supply of energy. Having this kind of dog as a companion sure will help you to stay fit.
How to train your dog #2 – Prepare enough time for your dog’s training
You should schedule your time to train your dog, because you will need enough time to do it. You will need to dedicate your time to do some formal or dedicated training sessions throughout the day.
Each of the formal training session can be 10 – 20 minutes a couple of times in a day. A longer than that, your dog will lose his attention.
Outside of the dedicated training sessions, you should also supervise your dog to avoid him from developing bad habits. You can also deepen your bond with your dog by interacting outside of the formal training sessions.
How to train your dog #3 – Be the leader
The most important thing after you choose what kind of dog you want, you must demonstrate leadership from the day he arrives at your house and you should maintain this throughout the entire dog training sessions.
Dogs are pack animals that follow a leader, so If you act like one, naturally, your dog will recognize you as his leader.
Being a leader does not mean you can be harsh to your dog. It is all about the interaction between you and your dog. You have to emphasize to his mind that you are the leader as soon as you bring your dog to your house.
The principle of being a pack leader means that you have to demonstrate confident, strong, stable, and consistent attitude.
Once your dog recognizes you as his leader, things will be much easier.
How to train your dog #4 – Give toilet training to your dog
Toilet training is necessary if you plan to let your dog spends most of his time inside of your house.
Compared to a puppy, toilet training a dog takes a longer time, but with the right approach you will see a happy outcome.
Here, we will show you a few tips for effective toilet training:
• Scheduled mealtimes. You have to feed your dog on a schedule during the toilet training, so outside of the scheduled mealtimes do not provide food your dog.
• Offer frequent opportunities to your dog to go outside. Give your dog a lot of opportunities to do his things outside. Let your dog to go outside regularly such as in the morning, after a nap, of after he finishes a meal.
Use this opportunity to choose a designated spot outside for your dog to relieve himself. Take your dog to the same spot outside when he relieves himself. Your dog will naturally recognize where the place for him to poop and pee by scenting the residual of his poop.
• Praise your dog when he does things right. When your dog relieve himself at the designated spot by himself without you pointing out, praise him, offer a treat to him, like taking a walk outside with him.
How to train your dog #5 – Give obedience training to your dog
It is a real pain to have a disobedient dog around. To have a fun companionship with your dog, you have to teach him obedience training, at least the basic.
At the very least, you have to dog teach your dog the following basic commands:
• Sit. Teaching your dog “sit” command will help you to keep your dog under control regardless of the situation. When your dog is anxious or unsure of the situation, this “sit” command will help him to calm down.
• Come. When your dog learns this command, he will come immediately at your call. This command also helps your dog stay out of danger by immediately calling him.
• Drop it. When your dog learns this command, he will instantly let go of things in his mouth. With this command, you can make your dog to drop dangerous things which can potentially harm him from his mouth.
• Stay. When your dog learns this command, you can make your dog to remain calm, still, and in one place.
